It’s interesting that I actually desire a video game “brand new”, for once!
For whatever reason, Dark Souls revived my video game player, the guy who wanted to play any and every game for far too long. To be quite honest, Theology Gaming sometimes comes at the cost of the fun that lies at the center of games in general. Via thinking about video game far too often, I must sometimes get into the nitty-gritty of several subjects. Some topics are just tiring and exhausting to deal with constantly with zero traction, and other times you find the dominant conversation topic as the most uninteresting thing ever. Thankfully, I find that plenty of people still like playing video games! And I am enjoying them again, as I should!
Whether that came about as a pretty clear demonstration of the overjustification effect, or merely because nothing in many years excited me in the same way, I’m glad to be back and rejuvenated! Thinking so much can tire you out after a while, and Dark Souls provided a wonderful kick in the pants. Nice that it came right before PAX East to liven me up a bit (not that the lack of sleep from playing too much helped that!).
So now what, I ask myself? Well, thankfully, Dark Souls II comes out for the PC on Friday, so I will be playing a whole lot of that. I had planned on waiting that out by playing Demon’s Souls all the way through, but impatience and the promise of a wonderful PC port got the better of me. I pre-ordered a game for the first time in a LONG time. It made me all giddy inside that I actually cared enough about a new release, and excited about what it would contain, to actually play it as part of the general conversation. I don’t even know what’s in the game, but that’s really the point. The guide from Future Press is sitting next to me right now, beckoning me to spoil it all for myself, and I am trying hard to refuse its siren call.
Ok, so small white lie: I opened it and flipped through some in anticipation. Hey, I paid for it, and I will look at it all I want. The thing weighs more than my cat, and you could probably bludgeon someone to death with it. Fitting, that.
At the same time, I am wrapping up/editing a huge long thing on Dark Souls that I wrote. I am unsure whether to cut this massive behemoth into several parts (it far surpasses 10,000 words, I’m pretty sure) or to edit it down to something palatable. You tell me, I guess! It’s pretty good at weaving several important topics in video games and the process of theological development together. Well, maybe just from my perspective, but we will see whenever I get around to editing it. And maybe after the slew of PAX East related content that I’m cooking up.
In the meantime, I figured I could throw the floor open for once on what will actually appear here on Theology Gaming in the upcoming weeks. What topics do you want to discuss, and what things can I explain in more rigorous detail? I mean, I did write a whole lot already, and definitely circled the wagon over certain subjects many times over, but I’m sure there’s something new and interesting to write!
I open the forum to your leisure! Normal posts will begin tomorrow daily (as they have FOREVER, or at least it feels that way), but there’s several ways you can participate:
– Comments on this particular blog post, as with most every blog post, will be read by me. So do that!
– Or, participate in our Facebook Group, called Theology Gaming University. We talk about many things, and we could certainly use more topics.
– Or just email me at zfo@theologygaming.com. I get the emails, and I read all of them.
Please participate! That’s sort of the point: let’s talk about video games and enjoy it.
